The Process

First, I tackled the root area and decided to go in with 7GV+ at the base. Then, I blended it right into 9GV+ with 20 volume developer. This gives my model a little bit of lightening lift at the root. I love the monochrome line because it has double the pigment as regular permanent color! Monochrome also allows for vibrant colors and long-lasting shine.

After the root was applied, I took teasylighte sections and painted them with Beyond Bond lightener and 20 volume developer. You may have seen me use Beyond bond in the past, it is one of my favorites when working with hair that is previously lightened, as well as hair that is curly.

Curly hair is naturally already dry, so you want to use an extremely gentle lightener when working with it. Beyond bond lightener has a dual bond complex, therefore it protects the inner and outer cuticle of the hair, making it a really safe option for your client’s curls.

After processing her for 30 minutes, I toned her with my trusty VP rapid toner for about 4 minutes. I love the rapid toners because they get the job done in 5 minutes or less!

Benefits of Golden Violet

Golden Violet is designed to give you effortless and beautiful sun-kissed results. It is one of my new favorites because it gives you the golden end results that a regular G does, but the added violet controls the warmth so it is no too in your face.

Why I use Permanent Color to lift Versus Bleach

My client’s natural root shade only needed to be shifted a shade, maybe even half of a shade to get the color we were looking for. Instead of going in with a lightener that could potentially damage her hair or lift her too light, I was able to use the permanent color to shift her natural base to a slightly lighter color.

However, you do want to note that color does not lift color, so make sure you have a thorough consultation with your client so you know what is in their hair before you try this technique on them. They must have all natural virgin hair to lift with permanent color.

5 Tips for enhancing Natural Curls

  1. Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner
  2. Mask weekly or daily depending on your hair type. Nourishing masque is my fave!
  3. Use a light weight leave in conditioner like Pearl Detangler 👌🏼
  4. Try using a cream styler to avoid the crunch like Curl Defining Cream
  5. Oil can be your best friend but try to find one that can be applied on wet or dry hair for shine and additional moisture like the Luxe Shine Oil.

Best ways to diffuse Curly Hair

I love to diffuse curly hair. I love the volume, I love the texture, I love the bounce. Whenever I diffuse a curly girl, I love to use Kenra Professional Curl Defining cream. It helps separate the curls while reducing frizz and flyaways. Moisturizing oil is also great for curls that just want a bit of extra shine!

I always use my Dyson Diffuser and I set it on high heat, but with a low blow. Have your client flip their hair over for added volume! Added tip: make sure to keep the diffuser as still as possible. The more you move it, the more you will create frizz, and curly girls do not like frizz.

Final Formula

7GV+ with 20vol 1:1

9GV+ with 20vol 1:1

Beyond Bond lightener with 20 Volume developer

VP Rapid toner 9vol developer 1:1 mixing ratio
