Color Correction – Pink to Blonde!

Do you ever see a canvas and you’re just like ugh, I want to make you so blonde! And then you do a beautiful teasylight, check her foils and you see bright PINK? Cuz that’s what happened to me! In this color correction from pink to blonde, watch how I take my client’s red box dyed hair to a beautiful blonde using all Kenra Color!

The Process

Color Correction – Pink to Blonde!

Using Beyond Bond Lightener, I started at the bottom hairline for a pretty bold section. I did a couple back to back highlights for a super bright end result. I opted for Beyond Bond lightener as my lightener because of its dual bond complex and I knew the lightener would be sitting there the longest. She did have box dye in her hair, so I wanted to make sure her hair didn’t get compromised.

Using my trust balayage board, I created a zig-zag section and did a heavy tease for a beautiful blend. When surface painting, you want to make sure you thoroughly saturate your sections! If you don’t, you can get the uneven lift that can make the hair look spotty. Sometimes I even comb through the section to ensure even saturation.

I continued to create zig-zag sections and a heavy teasylight all throughout her hair. On the very top section, I made sure to evenly paint both sides of the section. The reason I chose this type of sectioning is that I wanted it to fall naturally with her middle parting. It is similar to a regular mohawk section, but instead, side to side.

Around the hairline, I did a variation of baby lights and highlights for lots of brightness around the face. I also added some teasy lights for the maximum blend. As I mentioned in the video, I want to create the most blended and natural canvas possible. Yes, you can always do a color melt to blend, but what happens when that fades? With a heavy tease and a good blend, it makes your canvas look beautiful even without a color melt.

Pro Tip! When doing teasy lights, you always want to have a good detangler on hand. My personal fav is Kenra Pearl Detangler, watch in the video how quickly it detangled all of the knots! Click here to shop!

After checking her foils, we ran into a HUGE problem. Her hair was PINK! Oh no! Whenever you do a service with box dye, you always want to do a strand test and/or a Malibu CPR service to get rid of ay build up. I did not do either, so do as I say and not as I do! It bit me in the ass because then I had to go into color correction mode!

Luckily, I had an abundance of Kenra Professional Green Frost and a couple of pea sizes of Green Blue rapid toner which is perfect for neutralizing the pink. The reason it lifted pink is because she had red/pink box dye in her hair previously. When it was touched with bleach, it just lightened it to a pink. Using color theory, I neutralized the pink with a green. After letting that process, we did a color melt of 7NA right into 8RoM to help incorporate the pink and 8B at a 1:2 mixing ratio with 9 volume developer.

What is Malibu CPR?

CPR Malibu hair treatment
Malibu CPR treatment

Malibu CPR (Color Pigment Remover) should be your first step in color correction. It gets rid of up to 3 levels of color without removing the natural pigment of the hair and it removed the unwanted pigments from unoxidized color. It also had an antioxidant in it to help keep the integrity of the hair.

You can use this product under heat, and you can use color or lightener on it right after. If I used this before my service I may have not had any pink in her hair! If I did, it probably would have been a lot less. Malibu has a variety of different treatments depending on the hair’s needs. They have a brightening blonde treatment, a Hard water treatment, a direct dye treatment, and many more! Click here to check out more of their products!

Why hairdressers hate Splat!

Pinterest final formula
Color Correction – Pink to Blonde!

It’s no secret that hairdressers hate box dye. But Splat is probably one of the worst! It actually has fabric dye in the formula, that is why it is so stubborn to lift out of the hair. Sometimes lightening Splat can drive it into the cuticle further.

Many box dyes have intense chemicals that do not react well with bleach. When they come together, it can quite literally melt your hair off. It is best to get your hair professionally done! CLICK HERE to book your appointment with a salon professional.

In an article written by Laura Collins titled 5 Reasons Why You Should Never Use Box Dye, she states that, “I’m sure you probably already figured that box dye isn’t good for your hair, right? Believe me, there is a reason it is so cheap.

In order to save money and lower the cost, the manufacturers use low-quality dyes, chemicals, and additives to make this possible.

They typically contain high amounts of ammonia, PPDs, nitro dyes, metallic salts, and even henna. These are all harsh chemicals that can be extremely damaging to the hair as well as cause reactions to sensitive skin and allergies.

When you put box dye on your hair, it is permanent and these chemicals do not come out until the hair is cut off. Your hair will take on a new texture and feel stiff or straw-like due to all of the chemicals it now has embedded in the cortex.

You will need to use some serious conditioning treatments to get your hair feeling soft again, and it probably won’t ever feel as soft as it once did.”
