Airtouch Highlight Hair Technique with Lavender Tones

Lavender airtouch highlights

In this blog and video tutorial, watch me create a beautiful lavender hair using a Airtouch Highlight hair technique!

Blowdry the hair to create highlights? Yes, it’s a thing! I took the idea of airtouch highlight hair technique to make a balayage effect, creating lavender hair, and I’m going to show you how I did it! But first things first, what is it?

What are Airtouch Highlights?

According to this article in Modern Salon “The AirTouch technique uses air, versus teasing/backcombing, to create a seamless blend of color. Attributed to Vladimir Sarbashev, the colorist takes a section of hair with tension on the longest lengths and uses a blow dryer to push the shorter hairs and internal layers down and out of the way.”

Basically, I took this idea but created thicker sections in what I call a marriage between a teasylight highlights and balayage hair. These thicker sections create a rooted highlight effect and also allow me to surface paint the the section and saturate the ends.

Thick Versus Thin Sections:

The reason I chose to use thicker sections on my model is because we wanted a little but more depth on the underneath section to really make the top sections pop! This technique is all an illusion to the eye because the darker the underneath section is, the lighter the top section will look.

Versus my other Airtouch technique I did in the past, where we wanted a lot of overall brightness. I took smaller sections through her hair to give her a bright and blended look.

Tips to creating lavender hair

Let’s talk lavender.

Rule #1 is make sure the hair is light enough to tone into a lavender shade. The reason is lavender is essentially purple and purple cancels out yellow. If you have seen highlights process then you know EVERYONES hair can get yellow! Lifting to a 9 or 10 is imperative with this look.

PS. if you are a brunette babe, just know that it may be difficult to achieve but it’s doable if your hair is in great condition.

In this video tutorial, I show you how I highlight hair to blend gray hair while using Studio Stylist Express for a base break using Kenra Color! Read and watch this Highlight with Gray Blending tutorial.

Let’s be real, quarantine hair is REAL! My client came in and wanted to refresh her color and blend her grays. Overall it can be a bit tricky to lift this type of dark gray hair due to the fact that it tends to be a bit more on the coarse side. Read on to check out how I do highlights with gray blending.
