In this video tutorial, I show you how I highlight hair to blend gray hair while using Studio Stylist Express for a base break using Kenra Color! Read and watch this Highlight with Gray Blending tutorial.
Let’s be real, quarantine hair is REAL! My client came in and wanted to refresh her color and blend her grays. Overall it can be a bit tricky to lift this type of dark gray hair due to the fact that it tends to be a bit more on the coarse side. Read on to check out how I do highlights with gray blending.
Even though this was a thicker head of hair that needed correcting, I am always up for a good challenge! To achieve maximum lift and brightness, I went in with Kenra Professional Blue Powder Lightener with 30 volume developer.
Because she had so much regrowth I thought it was best to tackle this with a combination of Microlights, teasylights, and babylights. This process took me about 3 hours to complete.
When working on transformations such as this it is imperative that you do not rush, because that is where you can make mistakes.
Pro Tip: When highlighting, pivot your highlights for a more natural look!
Formula:
Lightner: Kenra Professional Blue Powder Lightener with 20 vol
Toner: Studio Stylist Express 7A and 7N for 5 min at the base with VP rapid toner on the ends.

Because my client has some compromised hair, I decided to go in with Kenra Professional Simply Blonde Beyond Bond lightener where I may overlap and blue powder lightener at the base. Beyond Bond lightener is my go-to lightener when working with previously lightened hair because of its dual bond complex. If I overlap, I don’t have to worry about the hair getting compromised because this lightener is so gentle.
